The 4C’s of Diamond Quality

The 4Cs of Diamond Quality is the universal method for assessing the quality of any diamond, anywhere in the world. The creation of the Diamond 4Cs meant two very important things: diamond quality could be communicated in a universal language, and diamond customers could now know exactly what they were about to purchase.

color
Although many people think of gem quality diamonds as colorless, truly colorless diamonds are actually very rare. Most diamonds used in jewelry are nearly colorless with tints of yellow or brown. At Galith, we use only colorless and near colorless (D-J) diamonds in our jewelry and engagement rings. Beyond J Grade, diamonds will have noticeable color to the blind eye.

Because diamonds form under tremendous heat and pressure, it is extremely rare to find a diamond that lacks any internal and external characteristics. These characteristics are a by-product of its formation and help gemologists separate natural diamonds from synthetics and simulants, and identify individual stones.

cut

Cut, not to be confused with shape, is a determining factor for the brilliance of a diamond. A polished diamond’s beauty lies in its complex relationship with light. An ideally cut stone will reflect light from facet to facet and out the crown of the stone, giving it an astonishing sparkle. A well-cut diamond can appear larger than a poorly cut diamond of greater carat weight.

cut

Diamonds are cut into an array of shapes that enhance their brilliance. Shape preference is completely a matter of taste, with no rights or wrongs, but shape affects price. Round diamonds can be up to 30% more expensive than other shapes.

carat weight

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. Alone, carat does not determine the value of a diamond. For diamonds under one carat, each carat is divided into 100 points, so a half-carat stone is called a 50 point diamond. Holding other factors constant an increase is carat weight increase the diamond price.
